The problem is that there are too many BMW fans that cannot accept a bad review – even when is the case.
Stay open-minded. I like the “german steel trio” Audi-Mercedes-BMW and I am not a fan of either. I would not buy this 5 series, unfortunately. It looks like a 3 in a bad way, while the 2012 3 series looks amazing!

@romanmicagearguy Fair enough. I guess it does depend on what people expect and appreciate in a car. For me, the criteria are: 1) precise delicate handling/steering; 2) Good acceleration; 3) the comfort of the snug seats; 4) Smart and elegant dashboard layout. A6 seems to accelerate just a bit faster, and it is CHEAPER. On all other points (important to me and listed above) the BMW is head and shoulders above A6.

@Amidat – Hahah 1991 was even worse for Audi. Audi almost went out of business because of fires and unreliability. Both Mercedes and BMW rank above GM in reliability. Land Rover is last, Jaguar is 2nd from last, than Audi/VW is 3rd from last, followed up by Chrysler, GM, Mercedes/BMW, Ford.. so on.

@constv1 when it comes to interior and comfort bmw simply isn’t better than audi. That’s a fact. Handling is the only advantage bmw has over audi an it’s losing it fast.

@andreivisan – Audi was the car manufacturer that introduced successful AWD in rallying… Subaru and Mitsubishi came after…. but yes… Audi sedans are not meant to be rally cars anymore like the EVO.

Test-drove an A6 3.0T Quattro yesterday after viewing this. I honestly expected to be impressed by the A6 performance. I drove my 2003 530i to the dealership and I could compare the two. HONESTLY, I was astonished by the difference! While, indeed, boasting powerful acceleration, w/its wobbly steering wheel the A6 doesn’t even begin to come near my 8-year-old 530i in handling! A6 is NOT in the same class with the 5 BMW, and any attempt to compare the two is dishonest!

one thing i disagree with in this review is that both Audi and BMW make all of their sedans to look alike… so that is a moot point when comparing the two. Will definitely say the new 5 looks better than the last one… looks more like an evolution of the generation before (E39 i think)

@IPGAuto – that was my point – in 1991 they were unreliable… but BMW’s are NOT more reliable than Audi’s now… not in the US and not in Europe. I’m sorry – but you are off. If you don’t believe… ask any independent mechanic who works on all German cars. No German cars except for Porsche’s are actually very reliable (because they don’t make many). They are all complex and high performing…. and unless you can afford the upkeep will be expensive.

@NathanDAdlen THey should re-incarnate the G8 as the next Impala to compete with the 300C. Beautiful, big, but sporty RWD American flagship sedan for Chevy. Chevy needs it. Sure the Malibu is kinda there but its not supposed to be the flagship. I know they will get a new Impala but its a little ways off.

what a amatures!!! a6 is getting more crispy but the feel off the bmw5 is still not matched. beamers are better build and last longer than audies. just go for a test drive in both of them. ps a beamer all wheel drive is no beamer. audi has done a great job though!

Audi Reliability is back on top of the list of late, certainly in the UK! As to this test and many other similar tests which are posted on youtube The AUDI A6 always comes out as the better car than its main rivals BMW & Merc. Audi are serious and their cars are just getting better and better!

@thestoryteller612 Dude, you are being brainwashed! BMW is no better than Audi or Mercedes. In fact, they are basically just as good overall and it’s just a matter of taste.
The new 5 series looks smaller than it is, therefore compared to the 3 series – while the A6 looks bigger, therefore compared to the A8. That’s what they mean.
With 60,000 euros in your poket go and test drive both cars. Go home with the one that suits you best. Simple as that!

@constv1 I was really impressed by the BMW’s steering and handling, but you can’t argue with physics and the BMW is just sooooo much heavier. Keep in mind that I’ve owned an M3 and a 525ix so I’m very familiar with both the car and the brand. We’re not cheer leading for either BMW or Audi, but in this case the Audi is the better car in our opinion based on the criteria we established.

While i truly do not like this comparison, they are right. The new 5 series has been bashed by all major magazines for not being up to par with the competition. Road & Track and Motortrend said the same thing, at the end of the day it is just to heavy. Even the 550i with 400hp does the 1/4 in 13.2, weight kills!!

@romanmicagearguy I certainly have test-driven a 2012 535i xDrive – on the same day. I agree, it is less sporty (the steering is softer) than the earlier 5-series models. But, come on, seriously, still no comparison! I intentionally say nothing about the exterior/interior design and dashboard layouts: it may be a matter of taste. But steering and handling – that what matters. A6 doesn’t come close. I mean, honestly, based on your review was prepared to be impressed. And I was disappointed.

@rowsdower12 It’s not annoying and is laid out quite well but I can see how some of the less-intelligent drivers out there (or old ones) wouldn’t be able to handle it. Then again, if one takes the time to press a few buttons there are built-in manuals and help sections which break down everything to the user.
